Brian K. Jordan was born in Miami, Florida in 1971. Soon after, his father’s business brought the family to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where he lived until the age of 18. As a child, Mr. Jordan developed his musical voice in his church choir. After receiving a bugle from his Uncle Zachary, the family soon realized that this young man could play songs with no instruction. It was apparent that Brian was destined to play the trumpet. Through his teen years, Mr. Jordan was instructed by and had many clinics with artists such as: Maynard Ferguson, Roco Bene, Woody Herman, Mike Vax, Roger Ingram, and many more. With this apparent love for music, he started taking piano and composition classes and began having deep theoretical conversations with the likes of such composers as Claude T. Smith, with whom he toured Europe in the Delaware Valley Symphonic Band. This was comprised of many students from the East Coast. The thirst for knowledge did not end there. After more conversations with professors such as Alfred Blatter, (The Curtis Institute in Philadelphia), Professor of Theory and Composition, Brian was encouraged to study at the University of Illinois. While at the university, Mr. Jordan played Principal Eb cornet for the British Brass Band, the premier brass and percussion ensemble. This was quite an honor, considering that the position was usually posted to a doctoral performance student, while Mr. Jordan was an undergraduate education student. Mr. Jordan also was a soloist and section leader in the illustrious "Marching Illini", named "The best band in the Land", by none other than the March King, John Phillip Sousa. While working with the "Marching Illini", Mr. Jordan wrote drill and taught not only sectional rehearsals, but also instructed marching and maneuvering.
Mr. Jordan has since taught every grade level from kindergarten through university ensembles. He conducted classes at Smith Walbridge Camps, University of Illinois and Texas Tech University. Mr. Jordan's ensembles have been met with critical acclaim with such directors as: James Keene (University of Illinois), James Bankhead (Former director of the Air Force Band, currently DOB at Chico Sate), Shannon Roberts (University of Utah), Russell Hammond (Director of the Sydney Opera House in Australia), and many more. Mr. Jordan's Chamber Wind Orchestra earned the top scores in the state of Utah 1A-5A in 1998. His Jazz Big Band earned the top scores in the state of Utah 1A-5A his first year at Wasatch High School in 1995 and continued on with the Jazz Band at notable international festivals such as the Lionel Hampton Festival. The Chamber Wind Orchestra was recommended to perform at the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinics in Chicago. Mr. Jordan is a highly sought after guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator throughout the United States. He is the former director of the Park City String Orchestra and has conducted many musicals and operas throughout his career. While in Park City, Mr. Jordan worked for Red Castle Films as the Musical Authenticity Consultant, for the film "Crescendo". Mr. Jordan’s students have been awarded scholarships to many major universities throughout the nation and have excelled in their appointments. Many of his students are now playing professionally throughout the jazz, blues, hip-hop, RnB, and classical circuits. Mr. Jordan is currently the Director of Bands and Director of Orchestra at Montbello High School in Denver, Colorado. At Montbello his students have been met with critical acclaim, especially his Drum Line. The Drum Line and band were named the “Best of the Westword” Magazine, 2006. You can see the Montbello Drum Line at many events throughout Colorado, most notably at the half time performances for the NBA’s Denver Nuggets. Mr. Jordan has earned a position as an official CHSAA adjudicator and adjudicates at many festivals throughout Colorado and worldwide. Since Mr. Jordan has been appointed as the director of the Denver Citywide Marching Band, they have grown exponentially in size and talent, so much so that they were appointed the "Governor's Cup", for their first place performance in the 2007 "Parade of Honor". They also performed six times on Fox News for the Democratic National Convention nationwide and another performance on Denver Fox News. Most recently, DCMB marched eighty kids at the Channel 9 “Parade of Lights” and placed fourth overall. This is an ongoing, evolving career which Mr. Jordan finds rewarding and challenging. In turn, he transfers this enthusiasm and desire to excel to all of his students and band members. |
